Freedom of Academic Debate: For All or for the Chosen Ones? Students’ Attitudes Towards Freedom of Speech Limits for Academics

Translated abstract

W ostatnich latach częściej mówi się o zagrożeniach dla wolności debaty i wolności słowa na uczelniach wyższych, w kontekście trendu społecznego zwanego kulturą unieważniania (ang. cancel culture). Kultura unieważniania to strategia wywierania presji społecznej, która na uniwersytetach, szczególnie zachodnich, może skutkować wykluczaniem nauczycieli akademickich z różnych form działania na uczelni, jeśli ich działania lub poglądy zostały oceniane jako obraźliwe lub naganne. Ze względu na to, że studenci stanowią najliczniejszą grupę w społeczności uniwersyteckiej, celem badania było poznanie ich intuicji w zakresie karania nauczycieli akademickich za wyrażane przez nich poglądy. Przeprowadzono badanie winietowe ( n = 115), w którym studentom zaprezentowano 16 przykładowych sytuacji z życia uczelni, w których przykładowi prowadzący wyrażali w jakiejś formie swoje, potencjalnie kontrowersyjne poglądy – lewicowe lub prawicowe. Badani oceniali, czy opisana osoba zrobiła coś złego i powinna ponieść karę, a jeśli tak, to jak surową. Wyniki pokazują, że zwolnienie z uczelni lub zakaz działalności akademickiej jest stosunkowo częstym postulatem: przynajmniej raz jego zastosowanie najostrzejszych konsekwencji zaproponowało 38% badanych, a 55% badanych postulowało wyciągnięcie jakichś sankcji instytucjonalnych w co najmniej dwóch sytuacjach. Badanie wykazało także, że światopogląd badanych miał kluczowy wpływ na decyzje respondentów: gdy był zgodny ze światopoglądem opisanym w historii, respondenci byli dużo bardziej akceptujący. Tymczasem ani płeć, ani wiek, ani deklarowana wartość przypisywana wolności słowa nie były istotnymi predyktorami akceptacji. Uzyskane wyniki stanowią istotny głos w dyskusji na temat współczesnych trendów w reglamentowaniu wolności słowa na uczelniach wyższych i powinny być brane pod uwagę przy projektowaniu działań nakierowanych na ochronę wolności akademickiej. Mogą służyć do lepszego zrozumienia źródeł punitywności akademickiej i zwrócenia uwagi na ryzyko związane z jej subiektywnym uwarunkowaniem.

Abstract

The results show that students relatively commonly demand that such persons be dismissed from the university or banned from academic activities: application of the harshest consequences was proposed at least once by 38% of respondents. The survey also showed that the respondents’ worldview had a key influence on their decisions: when it was in line with the worldview described in the story, respondents were much more accepting. Meanwhile, neither gender, age, nor the declared value attributed to freedom of speech were significant predictors of acceptance. The obtained results significantly contribute to the discussion about contemporary trends in freedom of speech restriction in academia. They should be taken into account when planning actions aiming at safeguarding academic freedoms. They can also help better understand the sources of academic punitiveness and draw attention to the risks associated with its subjective nature.
